Welcome to the Burnie Rostrum Club
Burnie Rostrum Club (Club 11) is a longstanding club in the northwest of Tasmania drawing members from Wynyard to Devonport.
We have a diverse group of members, a wide age range, and from all walks of life.
When are the Meetings?
Our meetings take place from the first Thursday in February to the last Thursday in November. We meet for one hour from 6:30pm to 7:30pm.
Where does Burnie Rostrum meet?
Our meetings are in person with the option to attend via Zoom. The in person meetings are held in the Platypus Room, Burnie Library. Access to this room is via the rear Library door and is suitable for wheelchairs.
Besides the annual subscription fee, there is a voluntary fee to help pay for room hire. Visitors do not pay this fee. There is a social evening/ meeting every fourth Thursday of the month. The program on this evening emphasises the speaking program. Members bring a plate of food to share. BYO drink.

What do Members Speak About?
The Club’s Programming Officer consults with members to ascertain what speaking and or chairmanship skills they wish to hone. Many new members work through the three-tier development program known as ‘Frontiers’ in collaboration with an assigned mentor.

What makes Burnie Rostrum special?
We have had members keen to improve their public speaking for a variety of reasons or wishing to learn meeting procedure and how to chair meetings; others have joined for the fun, friendship and fellowship.
Club members are genuinely interested in seeing new members’ speaking confidence grow in a supportive environment whether presenting speeches or chairing meetings. Rostrum uses a program called Frontiers new members can progress through at their own pace. You will be assigned a mentor and given feedback after each exercise is completed.

Nicholas Huisman
A brief Introduction
I am 23 years old and I am the Youth Pastorate, RPCC Church in North West Tasmania. I enjoy working with youth, playing sports and travelling when I can. I’ve lived in Tasmania my whole life and it’s great to get out and explore Tasmania.
What prompted me to join Rostrum?
I was invited along to join and develop my public speaking and communication skills, as they are both important parts of my job. Rostrum members in Club 11 have helped me grow in confidence, and I have improved greatly with the feedback I have received.
Have you been involved with similar clubs previously?
No, I haven’t been involved in public speaking classes before.
What do you like most about Rostrum?
I enjoy the challenge of creative thinking with every speech I complete. I value the input from members so I can continue to improve on my presentation skills.
I also have the role of Programming Director, which means that I get to give out different topics with a wide range of genres (persuasive, humour, research, etc.), ways of presentation (up-front, videos, PowerPoints, etc.), with the idea that after each speech, members can grow in confidence and ability with public speaking.
What are your other interests?
Playing Lawn Bowls, running, playing board and car games and more. I also enjoy LEGO building and coming up with new ideas for activities for the youth programs I run.
